Sicily: Crossroads of the Mediterranean
July 1 - August 31, 2013
Students will pursue intensive Italian language and explore in depth a cultural crossroads of ancient and modern times. Off the beaten track, Catania provides an ideal setting for students to practice Italian by engaging with local people, and to immerse themselves in the unique culture of this fascinating island. Courses rich in field trips and personal encounters will bring students face-to-face with the diverse population of this traditional part of Italy. For millennia, Sicily has served as the gateway from the African continent to Europe. To truly experience the crossroads of culture, the program will include a four day study period in Tunisia, to visit the ruins of ancient Carthage, and encounter modern-day North Africa firsthand.
